Getting Ready For My Halloween Exhibit

Here's a sneak peek at what I've been working on for my Halloween art exhibit in October. This friendly owl is titled Vintage Retro Owl 108 .

The art exhibit will be held during Wilkes-Barre's Third Friday art walk on October 17, 2008, in the Stegmaier Mansion (also known as Arts YOUniverse). Fellow Halloween artist and friend, Christine Altmann, will also be exhibiting with me. We're looking forward to a wonderful night.

My Watercolor Palette

I've recently been asked how I set up my watercolor palette. The majority of my paints are Grumbacher's Academy brand watercolors. I've been using this paint for years, and I've always been happy with the results. Recently, one of my students introduced me to the American Journey brand watercolors available at www.CheapJoes.com. The quality of this brand is superb, and the colors are beautiful. I'm also impressed by the price and size of the paint tubes. I haven't had the paint tubes for long, but I understand this brand does not dry out in the tubes over time. I also use a few of the Sennelier brand watercolors. They're also quality paints.

Clockface Earrings

Several people asked about these earrings since I started wearing them again. I fabricated these earrings in 1990 using sterling silver, etched sheet metal from David H. Fell. Although I've done my own etching before, I found this company's etched metal wonderful to work with.

Using a jeweler's saw, I simply cut two squares from the sheet metal. Then I soldered the clockface components on each piece of sheet metal. I used round wire and hammered it flat to create each number. To create the silver dots, I used my acetylene torch to "ball up" some old scrap metal. I love how old scrap metal forms into a ball when you hold a torch over it. Then I used a little bit of Black Max from Rio Grande to give the earrings an antique finish.

Summer Napkin Designs

I was tinkering around with these two designs in Renee Emanuel's workshop at The Wyoming Valley Art League two weeks ago, and I just finished them today. The Strathmore 4-ply Bristol board (plate surface) is a wonderful surface to work on. It's a smooth surface, which allows you to go back into your design and play around with the watercolor layers. If you enjoy working on hot-press paper, you'll love this surface.

I had summer napkins in mind when designing these two pieces.

Crafting With Liz

I just finished these two projects today to accompany the Gift of Love article I wrote for Simply Beads. The article, which is scheduled to appear in the December 2008 issue, focuses on making beaded gifts for special gift-giving occasions.

When decorating the birdhouse ornament, I set out to design it with a shabby chic theme. I painted the wood with a coat of titanium white. For the second coat, I dry brushed a mixture of titanium white and burnt umber. I used this mixture sparingly to create a natural, rustic look. I used Folk Art acrylic paints by Plaid.

If you look closely, you'll see how I used dark-colored craft wire to make wire flowers, which are neatly wired around one of the twigs that I collected from the yard. Then using the less-is-best design strategy, I glued turquoise beads sparingly on this piece. I'm very happy with the results.

The other project is called a basket of cheer. I created beaded wire picks to hold gift cards or lottery tickets. Find out more about how to make the beaded wire picks by picking up a copy of the December 2008 issue of Simply Beads.

Not Sure What To Do With All Those Christmas Cards?

I found a delightful way to display this year's Christmas cards. Since Julius (my lovely, little cat) loves to climb trees, I've decided to use Christmas cards and paper ornaments to decorate my Christmas tree.

Some of my art students kindly donated the paper ornaments we made in class two weeks ago. The students used craft paper, raffia, and cinnamon potpourri to make these unique decorations.

Thanks to all who participated in making my Christmas tree very special this year! In this photo, I've captured Christmas cards sent by my friends Rosemary and Sally.
