"Go Fish" Necklace

One of my jewelry-making students made this wonderful necklace in this morning's jewelry workshop at Arts YOUniverse. The picture is a bit blurry because my little camera doesn't have a macro zoom. I think this student did a wonderful job on her necklace.

This necklace is based on my "Go Fish" bracelet (pictured below) that appeared in the July 2009 issue of Bead Trends magazine.

Vintage Renauld Sunglasses

These sunglasses are truly a work of art. John scored them for me today at a church sale. They're vintage Renauld. What a great eye!

Embracing My Lithuanian Heritage

My dad just stopped by to give me this beautiful chunk of farmer cheese. You know you're of Lithuanian descent when you actually know what this stuff is. I love to eat it plain, but it's best when used for making cheese pierogi. The cheese has a nice salty flavor.

If you don't have time to make cheese pierogi, do it the "American" way by making American pierogi as my mom calls it. Essentially, it's the quicker way to obtain the taste of cheese pierogi without all the hassle.

All you have to do is boil a box of elbow macaroni. Fry up lots of butter and onions in a separate pan. Rinse and dry your elbow macaroni, and then place some of the macaroni in a long baking dish. Spread the farmer cheese on top of the macaroni, and then pour the butter and onions over that. Repeat another layer or two in the baking dish. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil, and bake in the oven at 350 degrees for about 45 minutes.

Last week, John's Auntie Carol made us potato pierogi "American style" with lasagna noodles and mashed potatoes. It's the same concept as the cheese pierogi but with mashed potatoes.

The key to making good Lithuanian or Polish food is using lots of butter and onions. Auntie Carol also made some red beet soup for me, and it was loaded with butter and onions. I added a spoonful of sour cream to the soup to thicken it up. That's the way my dad likes it too.

Dad gave me 3/4 of a pound of cheese. Let's see how long it lasts.

The Stratford Diner Gets My Vote!

Save for the ridiculous, new hike in tolls ($8.75 from NEPA to South Jersey), it was a glorious morning.

I've always admired this quaint, little house.

When in South Jersey, a visit to the Stratford Diner is a must. They have the best Spanakopita (Greek spinach pie). I love the fact that you can order this luscious treat for breakfast. Yum! Their hot chocolate is also smooth and creamy, and they always serve it with whipped cream.

If you're into burgers, you won't be disappointed with this grilled delight. John always orders extra pickles, and I get to eat the coleslaw. We both love "real" food for breakfast.

Here's the Stratford Diner's address. They're open 24 hours. Be sure to check them out if you're in South Jersey. The service is great, the food is outstanding, and they're always pleasant.

Love the blue sky! As always, it's great to be back in The Garden State.

A Warm Autumn Day

After parking my car, I turned to see a wonderful, ominous sky behind me on Franklin Street.

Here's another interesting look at those dark clouds.

Looking east, it didn't look so bad. When I got into my studio, it started to pour. At least it's warm outside rather than cold and damp.

My good friend Sandra set up a Halloween artist trading card and ornament swap. When I receive my goodies in the mail, I'll be sure to post them. Now I have to get to work on my creations.

Bead Trends October 2009

Wow! Once again the folks at Bead Trends did a fabulous job photographing my projects in this month's magazine. Both of the projects featured in this issue are from my Recycle With StyleTM jewelry line. The Going Green necklace is featured on pages 44 and 45, and the Locked Up earrings are on page 48.

It's amazing how you can combine discarded objects, such as aluminum pull tabs and flat lock washers with some beads to create fabulous jewelry. Next to the Swarovski crystals by FusionBeads.com and the pewter beads by TalismanBeads.com, no one would ever guess that those are lock washers used for plumbing.

This Drink's on Me, and It's Free!

I'm donating this original painting titled This Drink's on Me for Paper Kite Studio's Free Art Anniversary Show on Friday, August 21 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Always looking for ways to recycle old goods, I used a discarded kitchen cabinet door for the surface of this acrylic painting. Polka Dots

I design the majority of my work using traditional painting methods, but last week I had the opportunity to play around with Photoshop CS4. I designed several 12"x12" squares using polka dots. I love how the lime green background subtly changes to turquoise in this design sample.

Recap of Christmas in July

I had a wonderful time at Home Again's Christmas in July show on Saturday. Mary did a great job putting the event together, and she certainly had an eclectic group of artists at the show. I had the pleasure of sitting next to my friend Lynn Catnes of the Cat's Meow Designs and Christine Altmann, the Queen of Halloween. As you can see from this photo, Christine goes all out when it comes to Halloween.


Maria Livrone had a fantastic display of pottery and fused glass. Love those wind chimes!


The Verve Vertu studio showcased a colorful array of handmade pillows, needle-felted jewelry, greeting cards, and accessories. Here's a look at some of their batiks.

Web Design Experience

I've been doing some freelance graphic/Web design and writing for Resource Media, and I'm enjoying it tremendously. As a freelance artist and writer, my time may be limited, but my desire to learn keeps growing as I learn more about Web design. It's a fascinating subject.

To date, I've worked on several Web sites, including www.ChristineAltmannArt.com and www.LeighPawling.com. Now it's time to work on my own Web site. I've been putting it off because I simply didn't know where to begin, but the design professionals at Resource Media helped me get over that stumbling block.

The picture above shows the current layout I created using Adobe Illustrator. I may not end up with the exact color scheme or exact layout, but it's a start.

A New Use For Discarded Screw Nuts

I just finished two new pieces of jewelry for my Recycle With StyleTM jewelry line.

These pieces contain hex-machine screw nuts that I found in John's basement several years ago. The screw nuts belonged to John's grandfather, who was the ultimate handyman from what I understand. John's grandfather died in 1980, and his stash of goodies have been sitting in John's basement all this time. I'm thrilled to have used these items for my recycled jewelry.

A Spooktacular Lunch

Christine Altmann and I were invited to have lunch today with Halloween expert and author, Claire M. Lavin, along with Claire’s husband and daughters-in-law. Talk about an exciting day! Claire is a recognized authority, author, lecturer, dealer, and appraiser of vintage Halloween collectibles. She’s authored two books on the subject, and her collections and work have appeared on the Martha Stewart Show.

Claire discovered Christine Altmann’s Halloween artwork last year and has been a fan ever since. After dining at Hart’s Tavern in Peddler’s Village, we had a chance to visit several of the stores to check out some of the Halloween home décor items. A fun time was had by all.

The sky was blazing with color tonight as the sun set over Kingston.

As John and I headed east, the moon took control of the sky.

Down by the river, the lights danced along the water.

And the moon added to the ambiance of the night.

Fireworks created the final splash for July 4, 2009. Happy Independence Day, America!

4th of July in Jim Thorpe

Here's to a fabulous 4th of July in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania. On our way into this lovely, little town, I caught a glimpse of the rafters making their way down the Lehigh River. Look at that blue sky!

Here's a nice shot of the Asa Packer mansion in the distance.

When in Jim Thorpe, we always stop at The Emerald Restaurant for onion soup or JT's Steak House for shrimp. Today, the onion soup won.

As we made our way up Broadway Street, I had the pleasure of meeting Ruth Bush, a talented artist from Lehighton. Her artwork has a romantic, old-world feeling to it. She licenses her artwork for use on consumer products, and her prints are available online at a variety of places including prints.com and imagekind.com. For originals, be sure to visit her gallery, which is located at 84B Broadway in Jim Thorpe. The selection of artwork is unbelievable.

I love walking down Race Street. Check out some of these cool pictures.

Another favorite stop is The Country Cottage, which is located at 37 Race Street. The owner makes the best pickles I've ever tasted. That's the honest truth. The pickles are $8.50 a jar, and they're worth every penny! Last year, John and I bought a case of them. That's how good they are. Since returning home, I've already eaten five of these tasty delights, and I'll guarantee that this jar will be empty by night's end. The good news is that the owner will ship these pickles to you.


Chiseler knows a good pickle when he sees (or smells) one!

I also picked up some old buttons at The Country Cottage. For $2.00, you can purchase a generous scoop of buttons. They're perfect for jewelry making and all those country crafts. The Country Cottage also has a nice selection of country decor and candles.

While on Race Street, I stopped by to see Debbie at Homespun, where fellow artist Christine Altmann and I sell our artwork. Homespun sells a variety of prim/country home-decor items, furnishings, artwork, stationery, candles, and soaps. If you're looking for something unique for that special someone, be sure to stop by Homespun.
I couldn't resist these hand-made soaps by Parsonage Soap in cinnamon oatmeal, lemongrass, and lemon poppy fragrances. I just opened the lemon poppy, and I love it!

Christmas in July
